About Mail-Enabled Security Groups

Security groups with email capabilities combine two functions:

  • Access Control: Standard security group for permissions and access
  • Email Distribution: Can receive emails like distribution groups
  • GAL Presence: Appear in Exchange Global Address List
  • Use Cases: Department teams, project groups, IT security groups

Mail-Enabled Groups

All mail-enabled security groups - combined access control and email distribution.

Mail-Enabled Universal Groups

Universal scope groups - can span forests. Recommended for Exchange distribution.

Mail-Enabled Global Groups

Global scope groups - domain-wide. Can contain users from same domain only.

Mail-Enabled Domain Local Groups

Domain local scope - limited to single domain. Rarely used for email.

Groups With Proxy Addresses

Groups with email aliases configured - proper email routing setup.

Groups Without Proxy Addresses

Missing email aliases - may need email routing configuration.

Blacklist configured - specific senders blocked. Used for problem users.

Groups With Moderation

Moderation enabled - messages require approval before delivery. Controlled communication.

Essential Group Management Guidelines:
