Critical: Unsupported operating systems are severe security risks!
- No Security Updates: Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8/8.1, 10, Server 2003/2008/2012 are no longer supported
- Compliance Violations: Many standards prohibit unsupported OS (PCI-DSS, HIPAA, etc.)
- Attack Targets: Legacy systems are primary targets for ransomware and exploits
- Immediate Action: Upgrade or isolate these systems immediately!

Windows NT Computers
CRITICAL Extremely outdated OS from 1993-2000. Severe security risk!
- Support ended: December 31, 2004
- No security updates for 19+ years!
- Cannot meet any modern security standards
- Extremely vulnerable to all known exploits
- MUST be isolated or decommissioned immediately!
Windows 2000 Computers
CRITICAL Legacy OS from 2000-2005. Major security vulnerability!
- Support ended: July 13, 2010
- No security updates for 13+ years!
- Vulnerable to all modern threats
- Compliance violation in all regulated industries
- Upgrade or isolate immediately!
Windows XP Computers
CRITICAL Unsupported since 2014. High-value ransomware target!
- Support ended: April 8, 2014
- No security updates for 9+ years!
- Prime target for WannaCry and similar ransomware
- Cannot run modern security software
- Replace the hardware and move to Windows 11!
Windows Server 2003
CRITICAL Unsupported server OS. Cannot host production workloads!
- Support ended: July 14, 2015
- No security updates for 8+ years!
- Cannot run modern applications
- Severe compliance violation
- Migrate to Server 2022/2025 immediately!
Windows Vista Computers
CRITICAL Legacy OS from 2007. No longer supported!
- Support ended: April 11, 2017
- No security updates for 6+ years!
- Vulnerable to modern malware
- Hardware likely also outdated
- Replace with Windows 11 hardware!
Windows 7 Computers
HIGH RISK Popular but unsupported since 2020. Common in organizations!
- Support ended: January 14, 2020
- No free security updates for 3+ years!
- Paid Extended Security Updates (ESU) ended January 10, 2023
- Most common legacy OS found in enterprises
- Move to Windows 11 - check CPU and TPM 2.0 requirements first!
Windows Server 2008/2008 R2
HIGH RISK Unsupported server OS. Migrate immediately!
- Support ended: January 14, 2020
- No security updates for 3+ years!
- Cannot run modern server applications
- Compliance violation for production workloads
- Migrate to Server 2022/2025 or Azure!
Windows 8/8.1 Computers
HIGH RISK Unsupported since January 2023. No Extended Security Updates were offered!
- Windows 8: support ended January 12, 2016
- Windows 8.1: support ended January 10, 2023
- No Extended Security Updates (ESU) program for Windows 8.1
- Windows 11 needs TPM 2.0 and a supported CPU — most Windows 8-era hardware does not qualify
- Replace with Windows 11 hardware!
Windows Server 2012/2012 R2
HIGH RISK Unsupported since October 2023. Extended Security Updates end October 13, 2026!
- Mainstream support ended October 9, 2018
- Extended support ended October 10, 2023
- Only Extended Security Updates (ESU) still deliver patches — paid on-premises, included in Azure
- ESU ends October 13, 2026 — after that, no security updates at all
- Target: Server 2022/2025 or Azure!
Windows 10 Computers
HIGH RISK Unsupported since October 2025. Still common in organizations!
- Support ended: October 14, 2025 (Home, Pro, Enterprise and Education)
- No security updates without paid Extended Security Updates (ESU)
- Enterprise LTSC editions are supported longer: LTSC 2021 until January 12, 2027, LTSC 2019 until January 9, 2029
- LTSC machines show “LTSC” in their operating system name
- Move to Windows 11 - check CPU and TPM 2.0 requirements first!
EXTENDED SUPPORT (Plan Upgrades)
These versions are past mainstream support and receive security updates only. Plan upgrades before extended support ends.
Windows Server 2016
EXTENDED SUPPORT Extended support ends January 12, 2027. Migrate now!
- Mainstream support ended January 11, 2022
- Extended support until January 12, 2027
- Still receives security updates
- Support ends within months — start migrating now
- Recommended: Migrate to Server 2022/2025 before January 12, 2027!
Windows Server 2019
EXTENDED SUPPORT Security updates until January 9, 2029. Plan upgrades!
- Mainstream support ended January 9, 2024
- Extended support until January 9, 2029
- Still receives security updates, but no new features
- Fine for existing workloads; choose Server 2022/2025 for new deployments
- Recommended: Move to Server 2022/2025 during your next refresh!
FULLY SUPPORTED (Current/Recommended)
These operating systems are fully supported and recommended for production use.
Windows 11 Computers
LATEST VERSION Newest workstation OS with enhanced security!
Support Status
- Latest Windows version
- Enhanced security features
- TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot required
- No end date announced — each yearly version gets 24 months of updates (Home/Pro) or 36 months (Enterprise/Education)
- Version 25H2: supported until October 12, 2027 (Home/Pro) and October 10, 2028 (Enterprise/Education)
